IBM: Rumor Mill Says Significant Layoffs May Loom

 
In a world in which demand for all manner of IT goods and services is sagging, IBM may not be immune from the layoff wave that has hit the tech economy. In a story posted on InfoWorld, IDG News Service notes that a Web site for IBM employees operated by the Communications Workers of America is “buzzing with rumors” that as many as 16,000 layoffs could be announced at the company before the end of the month. The IDG item notes that a reduction in force of that size would amount to about 4% of IBM’s global workforce or more than 386,000 people. IBM told IDG that it does not comment on rumors.
