I recently learned that Australia has a similar scheme, called the “First Home Owners Grant”. Its history is somewhat interesting. (Click through to find my source for the following claims.)
The Aussies introduced the $7000 credit in July 2000, allegedly to “offset the effects of the Goods and Services Tax“. Except that it was targeted to do no such thing.
